She had 30 seconds to respond to a question about sexual assaults on campus' and why they are covered up. 30 seconds. Her answer:

I believe that some colleges may potentially be afraid of having a bad reputation and that would be a reason it could be swept under the rug, because they don’t want that to come out into the public,” Nia Sanchez said. “But I think more awareness is very important so women can learn how to protect themselves. Myself, as a fourth-degree black belt, I learned from a young age that you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself. And I think that’s something that we should start to really implement for a lot of women.Washington Post

The response to her answer by many on the internet was outrage. People began posting #yesallwomen and saying she was victim bashing and that she didn't answer the question well enough nor did she respond to why the schools are covering it up ENOUGH.

Really? Let's see... she gives her response to why they possibly may do such a thing. She does not excuse it, nor does she affirm it, but she answers what she thinks their reasons might be. THEN she goes to discuss what is close to her heart, and that is helping other women protect themselves from the crazies. How did she not do enough? She had 30 seconds. She answered a question, and offered up help to keep women safe.

Here's the reality, my friends. We live in a world that has evil in it. We live in a world where the choices of another person can bring horrible consequences into our lives. That will not change in the next minute no matter how many #yesallwomen posts and tweets go out. There are people out there who are willing to use their power to take advantage of other people, and no amount of talking is going to change their mind. Men and women abuse power, and men and women will be hurt by that abuse.

So what are we going to do about? Just sit around talking about #yesallwomen hoping that the talk will make a difference? Well, I think it will to a degree. Discussion is good. I understand what they are saying even if I don't agree with it all. I do not stand opposed to them, rather I think we can stand side by side.

I say it's time for #bepowerfulbestrong. You have power, my friend. Don't give it over to another! Don't depend on an attacker deciding not to attack. Don't depend on the kindness of a stranger. Don't depend on someone else to protect you. Don't wait to live in a uptopian society where everyone is love, peace, and grace. #bepowerfulbestrong and decide for yourself. Yes, crazy things will still happen. Yes, "There will always be someone bigger, stronger, and faster thank you are." {Mr. Boozer} But that doesn't mean you simply sit down and give away all the power of what happens to you. You have a choice. Stand up, and #bepowerfulbestrong.

Because while some believe words can change the hearts of crazy people, I believe there are many strong good people out there who only need to learn how to fight for themselves and others to make a huge difference. I know how the war for this world ends, in the long run, but let's fight each battle as if it is the last. #bepowerfulbestrong friends.
