Why you should increase your odds wherever you are.

Most people think nothing will ever happen where they will need to protect themselves. How often on the news does an interviewee after a crime say, "I never thought something like this would happen here." Before you will ever believe you need to learn to protect yourself, you need to believe there is a reason to do so.

The FBI states: "In 2011, an estimated 1,203,564 violent crimes occurred nationwide, a decrease of 3.8 percent from the 2010 estimate," with violent crime being "composed of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault." I picked a small random town in Nebraska at City-data to see what the crime rates were there. Is this an issue everywhere or just big towns? This town of about 5000 people has 12 registered sex offenders. They didn't have any murders or robberies in 2011, but they had 1 rape, 3 assaults, 11 burglaries, 117 thefts, 7 auto thefts, and 1 count of arson. I'm not picking on this town at all, I just want you to see that these things do happen, even in small town USA.

Now you may look at these numbers and think they are small, and they are. If you live there the odds are you very well may never deal with these issues, or need to protect yourself. The odds are with only 12 sexual predators, that's 1 for every 435 people, it wont be your problem. And you may notice the crime rates are going down, so why worry?

It's not that I want you to worry. I want you to prepare. The fact is crime does exist. The fact is it happens everywhere and it can happen to anyone. There may only be 1 rape in a city for a year, but how do you increase the odds you are not that victim? The only way you can do that is by learning how to protect yourself.

So, my question is NOT what are the odds it will happen to you. Those odds might very well be in your favor. My question is what will you do to increase the odds in your favor? The more you know the safer you are.

  1. I think I've always seen this verse in the way you've come to see it. Definitely a very "I can do this because of Jesus" kind of view. "DO" being face this.

Of course, there is also the scripture that says if we had enough faith, we could tell a mountain to move and it would. ;)
